Leicester City is still awaiting communication from the Nigeria Football Federation regarding Kelechi Iheanacho’s return to the East Midlands after representing the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles, honored by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja for their second-place finish, received the prestigious Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) national honor.
Iheanacho played a limited role in the tournament, making two substitute appearances and notably scoring the decisive penalty in the semifinal shootout against South Africa. Having missed Leicester City’s recent matches due to fitness concerns and international commitments, he joined the Super Eagles in Abidjan just before their opening game against Equatorial Guinea.
Leicester City’s manager, Enzo Maresca, expressed hope for Iheanacho’s availability in the upcoming match against Middlesbrough. Despite attempts to contact the Nigerian federation, they are still awaiting a response. Maresca mentioned, “We are still waiting for an answer. Hopefully, he can be back tomorrow or in two days.”
Iheanacho has contributed to eight goals (6 goals, 2 assists) in twenty-one appearances for Leicester City this season across all competitions.
