World Athletics has officially announced that the 10th Okpekpe International 10km Road Race is scheduled to take place on May 25, 2024.
This race, being the pioneer road running event in West Africa to receive recognition from World Athletics, has earned its place among the 30 gold level road races listed in the global calendar of races for 2024.
World Athletics has confirmed a total of 167 road races for the year, and the Okpekpe race stands out as the inaugural gold level 10km road race set to occur in 2024.
Zack Amodu, the director of the race, expressed his satisfaction with the continued success of the Okpekpe Road Race since being granted a bronze label status by World Athletics in 2015.
He stated, “Our success is attributed to our adherence to World Athletics rules and the unwavering support from Okpekpe town and its surroundings, the people and government of Edo state, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, and, of course, our sponsors.”
Amodu highlighted the significant impact of the sponsors, making Edo State and Nigeria a noteworthy destination for sports. He emphasized that on May 25, the global sporting spotlight will be on Nigeria during the race, making it the sole gold level road race worldwide on that day, ensuring undivided attention.
