CAF has confirmed the match calendar for the 2026-27 CAF Champions League, giving clubs across the continent a clear timetable for a campaign that begins with preliminary-round football in September and ends with the final stages in May 2027.
The schedule matters well beyond the dates on a fixture list. For champions and leading clubs from Africa’s domestic leagues, the preliminary rounds shape travel plans, squad registration, recovery time and the difficult balance between continental ambition and domestic commitments.
A September start for the qualifying rounds
According to CAF’s official calendar announcement, first-leg matches in the first preliminary round are scheduled for 4–6 September 2026. The return legs follow from 11–13 September, leaving clubs only a short window to adjust between the two fixtures.
The second preliminary round is set for October. First legs will be played from 16–18 October, with the return matches scheduled for 23–25 October. Those ties will decide the clubs that advance to the group stage and move closer to the most visible part of Africa’s premier club competition.
For teams entering at the preliminary stage, the calendar places an early premium on preparation. Several domestic leagues will still be in the opening weeks of their seasons, while others may be operating on a different cycle. Clubs will have to manage fitness, registration deadlines and long-distance travel before they have fully settled into their domestic rhythm.
Group stage runs through the turn of the year
CAF says the group stage will be played between November 2026 and January 2027. That window creates a concentrated run of continental fixtures and will test the depth of squads competing on several fronts.
The timing is especially significant for clubs with a large number of internationals. National-team windows, domestic league schedules and continental travel can quickly compress recovery periods. Coaching staffs will therefore need to plan rotations carefully, particularly when away matches involve journeys across multiple time zones.
Supporters can also expect the group stage to provide the first sustained picture of the title race. Preliminary rounds are often shaped by unfamiliar opponents and difficult conditions, but the league-format phase offers a longer test of consistency, tactical flexibility and squad depth.
Final stages scheduled for May 2027
The decisive phase is due to conclude in May 2027, with CAF placing the finals within the 9–31 May window. The exact match dates and participating clubs will be determined as the competition progresses.
CAF also confirmed that the winner’s prize remains USD 6 million. The financial reward strengthens the importance of the competition for clubs seeking both sporting prestige and resources that can support recruitment, facilities and long-term planning.
What clubs must prepare for now
Before September, qualified clubs will need to finalize player registration, confirm venue compliance and coordinate international travel. The short gap between first and second legs means small logistical problems can become competitive disadvantages.
The calendar gives teams and supporters an early framework, but individual fixtures will depend on the final entry list and draw. Clubs should rely on CAF and their national associations for confirmed opponents, venues and kick-off times.
